Sydney University Medical Society invites you to the 5th annual Women in Medicine Dinner. This event is a great chance for you to meet women who have already forged their career in Medicine. You will have the opportunity to speak to women who are leaders in many areas of Medicine including Anaesthetics, Aviation Medicine (with the RAAF), General Practice, Gynaecology, Neurology, Obstetrics, Oncology, Paediatrics and Surgery.
 
When: Thursday 30th July; 6:30pm
Where: Women’s College (15 Carillon Ave, Newtown, University of Sydney)
What: The dinner will include guest speaker presentations, a 3 course meal and drinks.

Speakers

Dr. Theresa Armstrong – General Practice/Aviation Medicine (DFR sponsored guest speaker)
Dr Theresa Armstrong is currently working as an Aviation medical officer at RAAF Base Richmond in addition to completing her General Practice training.  Her ties with the military started with joining the RAAF through the Undergrad sponsorship scheme in her first year of medical school at the University of Sydney in 2001.  Since commencing full time service in 2007 Theresa has been deployed to the Middle East, taken part in numerous military exercises and aero medical evacuations of both military and civilian members.  When she's not out on defence taskings she divides her time between working as an Aviation medical officer and completing her General Practice training.

Dr. Louise Baur - Paediatrics; Clinical Nutrition
Louise Baur is Professor in the Discipline of Paediatrics & Child Health at the University of Sydney and Chair of the Board of Directors of the NSW Physical Activity Nutrition and Obesity Research Group at the University of Sydney. She is a consultant paediatrician at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, where she is Director of Weight Management Services.  Louise is Co-Chair of the International Obesity TaskForce’s Working Group on Childhood Obesity. Amongst a range of community activities, she is a Director of World Vision Australia.

Dr. Catherine Birman – ENT Surgery (guest speaker)
Dr Birman's practice covers both general paediatric and adult ENT and sub-specialty areas. She completed a paediatric ENT Fellowship in 1997. She co-runs Australia's first paediatric voice clinic at The Children's Hospital at Westmead. Dr Birman is one of Sydney's leading cochlear implant surgeons, working with the Sydney Cochlear Implant Centre. Dr Birman's interests also include FESS surgery, and general paediatric ENT of glue ear, obstructive sleep apnoea and tonsillitis.

Dr. Fran Boyle – Medical Oncology
Fran Boyle is a Medical Oncologist at North Sydney’s Mater Hospital, where she is Director of the Patricia Ritchie Centre for Cancer Care and Research, and Associate Professor of Medical Oncology at the Northern Clinical School, University of Sydney. 

Fran graduated from University of QLD Medical School with Honours and a University Medal. She undertook her initial physician training at the Mater in Brisbane, before transferring to Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney to complete her Medical Oncology training and a PhD in Pharmacology. 

Fran’s clinical practice focuses on breast cancer and melanoma, in association with the newly formed Melanoma Institute of Australia at the Mater. Her current research interests include clinical trials of new cancer treatments, psychosocial and supportive care, and Doctor-patient and multidisciplinary team communication. She chairs the Scientific Advisory Committee of the ANZ Breast Cancer Trials Group and is a member of its Board of Directors.

Fran was honoured with Membership of the Order of Australia in 2008 for services to cancer research, advocacy, policy development and professional education. She is married to an Ophthalmologist, mother to 15 year old twins, and in her spare time sings tenor in the Choir of St Francis of Assissi Paddington.

Dr Gabrielle Casper – Gynaecology (guest speaker)
Dr Gabrielle Casper (BSc (Hons)  MBBS  FRANZCOG) is a Sydney gynaecologist with a special interest in women’s health and human rights. She is Immediate Past President of both the Australian Federation of Medical Women and the Medical Women’s International Association (MWIA). She has represented MWIA at the World Health Organisation and United Nations meetings. Dr Casper received the 2004 Australian Medical Association (AMA) Women’s Health Award and also the 2004 AMA Woman in Medicine Award.

Professor Elizabeth Elliot – Paediatrics
Elizabeth Elliott is Professor in the Discipline of Paediatrics and Child Health at the University of Sydney and Consultant Paediatrician at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead in Sydney. She is Founder and Director of the Australian Paediatric Surveillance Unit, a national research group with a focus on rare diseases of childhood; heads the Centre for Evidence Based Paediatrics, Gastroenterology and Nutrition in Sydney; and currently holds an NH&MRC Practitioner Fellowship. 

Elizabeth is actively involved in medical education at the University of Sydney and also heads a clinical education program in Maternal and Child Health for health professionals in Dien Bien Province, Vietnam.  She has co-authored 6 books on topics including scientific writing, evidence-based paediatrics and adolescent medicine and has published widely. She is President of the Paediatric Research Society Australia and New Zealand and her current research involves a number of uncommon but high impact conditions in children including fetal alcohol syndrome and the haemolytic uraemic syndrome. 

She is married to a Child Psychiatrist and has three children, one of whom is studying Medical Science at the University of Sydney. Elizabeth was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2008.

Dr Katherine Jeffrey – Critical Care Medicine
Dr Katherine Jeffrey is a Senior Resident Medical Officer based at Westmead Hospital. She is specialising in Critical Care Medicine including Intensive Care and Anaesthetics. Katherine also chairs the NSW AMA Doctors In Training committee which represents all Junior doctor in NSW from Interns up to Registrars. She also sits on the Doctors Health Advisory Service and Federal AMA DIT Committee as a Junior doctor representative. In her spare time she sails to relax and watches Rugby Union.

A/Prof. Amanda McBride – GP Academic
Associate Professor Amanda McBride has been in active general practice since 1981. 

She has previously taught for the University of Sydney Medical School. She has an extensive experience of involvement in the Australian Medical Association and in 1993 was awarded the Presidents Award from the NSW branch of the Australian Medical Association for achievements in Women’s Health Policies in NSW. In 1996 Amanda was awarded a Fellowship of the Australian Medical Association. Other involvement has included being a member of the Federal Council and an inaugural member of the Women and Medicine Committee, including being Chairman from 1991-1995 and Co-Chairman from 1995-1996. She was also Chairman of the Committee for Fetal Welfare and the Law from 1994-1996. Within the NSW branch of the Australian Medical Association, Amanda has been a member of the branch council for a number of years, including the position of Honorary Secretary of the Executive Council for 5 years. Within the section of general practice, she was involved on the Women’s Advisory Committee and was the spokesman on General Practice in Women’s Health from 1989-1992. 

Amanda has also been involved with the National Health and Medical Council working party on automated and semi-automated cervical cancer screening devices and has been on the National Advisory Committee for the early detection of breast cancer, which is now known as “Breast Screen Australia”. She was a representative on the federal AMA Committee from 1993-1997 and has been involved with the Cancer Council of NSW for a number of years. 

Amanda has been a member of the Medical Services Committee of NSW, Medicines Australia and the National Breast Cancer Centre. Her other interests include being involved with the ovarian cancer screening program and a member of the Strategic Development Working Group for the National Breast Cancer Centre. Amanda has been involved as an executive member of the Australian Society of Psychosocial Obstetrics and Gynaecology and is currently treasurer of this organisation and within the Northern Sydney Division of General Practice; she has been a member of its Strategic Development Board and has been a general practice advisory committee member for Medical Observer magazine. She has been an invited speaker at a number of general practice related conferences, including the Australian Federation of Medical Women conference for Australia and Southeast Asia and the General Practice Women’s Health Conference, providing talks on women’s health politics in the 90’s. Amanda has teaching interests in counselling and communication skills.
